Din secolul XV pana in jurul anului 1700, cand au avut loc importante descoperiri pe cale maritima, s-a constatat ca marinarii se imbolnaveau de o afectiune cauzata de consumul insuficient de fructe si legume proaspete. Aceasta afectiune a fost si este numita scorbut. In stadiile avansate, acesta se manifesta prin hemoragii gingivale, caderea dintilor, dureri osoase, atrofii musculare, iritabilitate, depresie sau anemie. Unele surse\u003csup\u003e1\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003esustin ca aceasta boala a ucis milioane de marinari in epoca de aur a explorarii maritime.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-gray-dark text-base leading-6 pb-4\"\u003eIn 1700, chirurgul scotian pe nume James Lind a inceput sa dezvaluie informatii relevante despre scorbut. In martie 1747, scotianul James Lind, care a fost numit chirurg al echipajului aflat pe o nava de patrulare in Canalul Manecii, a inceput sa stranga dovezi despre posibilele cauze ale aparitiei scorbutului. Dupa opt saptamani pe mare, cand boala a inceput sa afecteze echipajul, Lind a decis sa faca un experiment. Pe data de 20 mai, a impartit cei 12 marinari bolnavi in sase grupuri si a inclus in dieta fiecarui grup cate un supliment diferit: cidru, solutie diluata de acid sulfuric, otet, apa de mare, doua portocale si o lamaie, respectiv amestec purgativ.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-gray-dark text-base leading-6 pb-4\"\u003eCa urmare a ceea ce unii au considerat primul studiu clinic din istorie, doar starea celor doi marinari care au consumat fructe s-a imbunatatit. Astfel, s-a descoperit o relatie directa intre ameliorarea manifestarilor tipice scorbutului si vitamina C.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"text-gray-dark text-base leading-6 pb-4\"\u003eAbia in anul 1912, in urma unor experimente efectuate pe porcii de mare, s-a putut dovedi ca scorbutul este, intr-adevar, o boala cauzata de lipsa vitaminei C, iar in 1933, cercetatorii maghiari Joseph L. Svirbely si Albert Szent-Györgyi si cercetatorul american Charles Glen King au izolat pentru prima data vitamina c (acidul hexuronic). Acidul hexuronic este denumit apoi acid ascorbic, recunoscandu-se formal natura antiscorbutica a compusului. Acestia fac parte din categoria oxidantilor, care, de regula, sunt neutralizati de sistemul antioxidant natural al organismului nostru. In general, corpul este capabil sa mentina un echilibru intre nivelul de antioxidanti si radicalii liberi, insa, atunci cand acesta este periclitat, apare stresul oxidativ. Aceasta analiza a evidentiat faptul ca administrarea unui supliment de vitamina C a redus tensiunea arteriala sistolica, cu aproximativ 3,8 mmHg, si tensiunea arteriala diastolica, cu 1,5 mmHg, la adultii sanatosi. Explicatia specialistilor ar fi ca vitamina C sustine organismul in producerea celulelor albe din sange, cunoscute sub numele de limfocite, care au rol protector impotriva bolilor infectioase si corpurilor straine. Totusi, persoanele care ar putea fi susceptibile la deficitul de vitamina C pot beneficia de utilizarea suplimentelor de vitamina C, fiind recomandata si validarea administrarii de catre medic. Luate in doze adecvate, suplimentele orale pe baza de vitamina C sunt, in general, considerate sigure. Vitamina C, fiind hidrosolubila (se dizolva in apa), prezinta un risc redus de aparitie a efectelor toxice sau a celor adverse deoarece excesul este eliminat pe cale urinara.
